CALL FOR ENTRIES
Hello everyone! The Ladies of Literature project is pleased to announce that we’re beginning work on Volume 2! We’re hoping to make this book even bigger and more beautiful than Volume 1. We’ve invited our Volume 1 veterans to come back to contribute, but we’re looking for even more fresh talent to fill the pages!
For those who don’t know, Ladies of Literature Volume 1 was an illustration anthology that celebrated our favorite female book characters and authors.
This time around, we’re still working with the same premise, but we’re placing a stronger emphasis on illustrations that tell stories. We want well-composed illustrations that showcase exactly why you fell in love with your character or author. Make us want to pick up their stories for ourselves—like the ultimate book recommendation.
The book is going to be Kickstarted to cover cost of printing and compensation for all contributing artists. All artists will get a copy of the book. Any remaining Kickstarter and book sale funds will be donated directly to in-classroom childhood literacy projects via DonorsChoose.org.
(That being said, obviously this is a project that may include copyrighted characters so if we run into legal trouble, we’ll have to shut the whole thing down.)
We’re aiming to have 75 artists in total so if you’re interested in participating, fill out this Google Form with your name and portfolio by AUGUST 31, 2014. We’ll notify our final choices by mid-September. Thank you! So excited to see all of your work!

Final reblog! Just a few more hours before we close the form!

Anonymous asked:

I'm really sorry about bothering you, and this seems to be too soon, but do you have any plans, however vague, of volume 3? I'm not really satisfied at the level I am right now and therefore will not submit my art to volume 2, but I would love to try once I've improved.

Currently, we aren’t thinking that far ahead. We’re estimating months and months of development on Volume 2, and that is taking first priority for us right now.

That being said, the two of us are always coming up with new collaborative illustration zines. Even if you don’t feel comfortable applying now, you might consider applying to one of our future projects. :)

Addressing Some Questions

  1. What criteria are we looking for?

Basically, we’re just looking for artists who can tell a story in one image. It’s not like we’re looking at each portfolio and going, “HMM THIS ARTIST DOESN’T HAVE ANY WOMEN OR BOOK CHARACTERS IN THEIR PORTFOLIO. REJECTED!!” We’re looking for a basic understanding of visual storytelling, narrative ability, and capability to complete a piece. That being said: we like sketches, but it does help to see completed works in your portfolio. This gives us a better idea of what kind of work we might expect from you.

  2. Are the artists from volume 1 coming back?

We did ask all of our artists from Volume 1 to come back, and most of them have agreed to contribute to Volume 2.

  3. How many artists in total will you have in the book?

The original number was 75 (including the volume 1 artists.) The call for artists has far exceeded our expectations, so we’ve been discussing the possibility of adding more to the number of accepted artists. Unfortunately, this still means not everyone who applied can be accepted.

  4. Does your work have to be digital?

No. We had a few traditional submissions last year. Your work can be anything as long as it tells a story.

Ladies of Literature call for artists open until 11:59pm on August 31st!

Anonymous asked:

I'm sorry, I'm a little confused because of the title. I understand you're doing illustrations based on female authors and female characters but are you looking for only female artists aswell? Or is it open to both genders? (Also how many applicants do you have thus far, generally speaking, if you don't mind me asking?) thanks :)!

We’re looking for artists of all genders to draw female authors and female characters!

As for the number of applicants, the response thus far has been wonderful. A lot of artists have already submitted their names for consideration. Of course, we’re still looking for as many artists as possible to apply. The jurying process doesn’t start until after the form closes, so everyone has a fair chance, no matter how early or how late you applied.
